Malibu Drone Cinematography: FAQ
Is it legal to fly a drone for a production in Malibu?
Yes, with the right authorization. The coastline sits under the LAX Class B veil and near Santa Monica and Camarillo airspace, so each location needs its airspace class identified and the matching authorization or waiver in place. We handle that in pre-production along with the film permit.
Do beach shoots need anything beyond a film permit?
Beach operations often require a NOTAM filing and coordination with the US Coast Guard, and flight lines are planned so the aircraft never passes over the public. We manage the full permitting process.
What about fire season?
Wildfire temporary flight restrictions over the Santa Monica Mountains cannot be predicted, only planned around. For canyon and hillside locations from late summer through fall we flag the risk in advance and build a backup location or float day into the schedule.
